Treat Your Own Knee Arthritis

By Fitness Plus
Format:Paperback
I'm always keeping my eye out for knee arthritis treatments and found this book. It's written by a physical therapist and is divided up into 9 chapters:

-Chapter 1 is "Here's What's Going On In Your Knee". It explains the structures of your knee that are involved in knee arthritis. This chapter is about 20 pages long and contains about 20 pictures- so there's not a lot of boring reading, but rather simple explanations coupled with great illustrations. Trust me, you'll know what's going on in your knee in pictures after reading this chapter.

-Chapter 2 is "What's Likely to Happen to Your Knee Over the Long Run". This is the chapter where the author talks about the course that arthritis takes. It's filled with studies that have followed people over many years with arthritis- and come to find out arthritis doesn't always take a downhill courses. In fact its highly variable from one person to another.

-the next four chapters are the meat and potatoes- the treatments. Here the book shows you how to make your knee stronger, more flexible, improve its position sense, and endurance. The exercises here are designed to target specific problems that arthritic knees have been found to have in research studies.

-Chapter 7 pulls the exercies together into a six-week program. Now this was something you don't see much. You get workout sheets for six-weeks, and the sheets contain the pictures of each of the exercises and a place to check off that you've done it for that day. I liked this because there's absolutely no confusion as to what to do, and it keeps you on track everyday. But perhaps the best part is that the whole program takes just a few minutes a day to do, aside from the endurance exercise.

-Chapter 8 contains a questionnaire to help you measure your progress, and the last chapter is references.

My overall recommendation is to get this book if you have knee arthritis to get better educated. There's a lot of confusion sometimes as to what's going on in your knee, and as the book points out, knee arthritis if far from just a case of worn-down cartilage- you've got a lot of other structures affected, and perhaps more importantly, a lot of vital knee functions are being lost you probably weren't aware of (like proprioception which helps protect your knee joint). Use this book to restore them.

Neo G MEDICAL GRADE STABILISED OPEN KNEE with PATELLA SUPPORT- THE ULTIMATE SKIERS SUPPORT (Lots of Support & Bounce)

I bought this about a month ago. I'm old and decrepit (55) but desperate to get back into playing gentle 5-a-side football after a knee operation (arthroscopy)to repair a a nasty tear to the meniscus and remove other bits of worn out cartilidge (it's an age thing!!). As a result there's not a lot of cartlidge left and there is a bit of arthritis. If you can relate to this then this product may be what you're looking for.

I read all the reveiws but couldn't see anything that I thought would be helpful specifically to my problem. This one seemed the closest so I took a chance on it and it works! It keeps the knee stable and applies compression in all the right places and whilst I'll probably not be fit enough in time to make the world cup squad I can at least 'limp' round the 5 a side pitch in relative comfort.

It's great to wear at the gym or during exercise of any kind but I imagine it would become uncomfortable if it was worn all day for general support.

Neo G MEDICAL GRADE OPEN PATELLA KNEE SUPPORT 'breathable design'

As you get older, your knees need all the help they can get- and this brace can help a lot. It uses two sturdy velcro straps to hold it in place and keep it from sliding around. Several other features of this brace:

-you'll probably sweat less in it than other braces because its made to be breathable
-the cut out hole for your knee cap seems to be reinforced around the edges- unlike some braces where its just a hole with no extra support

Get it if your knees feel like a little extra support would do them some good- I don't think people with knee arthritis will be disappointed. Remember though, the brace supports the knee, and doesn't do anything to strengthen it and get it into better shape- highly recommend checking out Treat Your Own Knee Arthritis for that. Good luck!

Bored on Sundays? Become a "Fantasy Football" Team Owner

Team Axis Football

By Patrick E. Ward
During the NFL (National Football League) season, not only do the professional athletes themselves prepare, study opponents, and do as much as they can to get ready for the games every Sunday, but so do millions of people who participate in "Fantasy Football" leagues across the nation. The NFL is already the most popular of the professional sports in this country. Taking first place in television ratings to professional baseball, basketball, hockey, and soccer as well. "Fantasy Football" is a phenomenon that literally allows the average fan to become an Owner, General Manager, and a Head Coach of their very own national football teams. "Fantasy Football" leagues are held in person with friends and office co-workers across the country, as well as online with millions of leagues and thousands of websites. With most of the leagues that are held in person, as opposed to the leagues online, theses leagues usually charge a predetermined amount of money to participate. The predetermined amount of money that is charged for each of the team owners will eventually go into the pocket of the team owner who ends up winning the entire "Fantasy Football" league season. There are sixteen regular games in an NFL season, so these "Fantasy Football" leagues, like the NFL, have play-offs as well that usually start in week thirteen or fourteen of the regular season. Which means that the last two teams standing in the league by week fifteen, will have their "Fantasy Superbowl" during week sixteen of the regular season.

These "Fantasy Football" leagues start before the regular season, usually around the end of August. They start by conducting a "draft" where each of the team owners select their team that they will start the regular season with. This is the team that the owners will compete with throughout the entire season. With the exception of the occasional trade or free agent pick-up, just like the regular NFL. Now, every "Fantasy Football" League is different, and has different set-ups with the number of players each team can carry as well as different point scoring systems, for example. The average "Fantasy Football" league allows each team to have a sixteen player roster, and can only start nine players on a week to week basis. The majority of the leagues out there, regardless if it is an online league or not, will only allow an owner to start one Quarterback, two Running Backs, one "utility" player (which is usually an extra Running Back or Wide Receiver,) two Wide Receivers, one Tight End, one Defense / Special Teams, and one Kicker.

It's very important for every team owner to stay up to date with their team and league due to injuries to players that occur throughout the season, as well as "bye" weeks that every team has. A "bye" week is basically a week off, that every team gets throughout the treacherous season of sixteen regular season games. "Bye" weeks are necessary in the NFL because it is such a physically demanding sport. Being a "Fantasy Football" team owner can become very time consuming due to the fact that an owner doesn't want to make the mistake of starting a player who happens to be injured, or starting a player who happens to have a "bye" that week. If an owner happens to start an injured player who isn't playing that week, or if that player is playing, but is not expected to be as productive due to a nagging injury, it can ultimately result in a loss for that owner's team that week. Of coarse this process can be even more time consuming for those who participate in more than one "Fantasy Football" league, which most people do anyway.
"Fantasy Football" has become more and more popular to participate in because it gives the average fan the ability to become closer to "die-hard" fans because it forces the team owners to pay closer attention not only to every game, but every player as well. When people have the chance to win money by doing something that they love and keeps the games on Sunday more exciting, it makes it all the more worth while to participate in "Fantasy Football" leagues. Of coarse those who know more about the game and the players who play in them, it obviously gives them an edge on winning their league. However, even the football novice can enjoy " Team Axis Football ," and it makes Sundays more exciting for them as well.

Mitre Sensation Training Football is new sesoan training balls

Mitre's new Sensation training ball has 32 panels rather than the traditional Mitre 18 panel design so technically should be rounder. The Sensation has a nice, Match Ball type softness and the foam backed pvc material is apparently designed to retain it cushioned feel even when cold.

I've bought 5 of these as training balls and have had them pumped up for about a week. The air retention appears good and the ball are nice to use in training, particularly if practicing heading. I have used one as a match ball and it coped well although it was a bit lively on the bounce and could possibly cause keepers problems. Having said that none of the players complained.

The only downside I have seen so far is that the colored decor doesn't hold up to well and became smudged fairly quickly.

Overall, a nice ball and if you shop around you can get for cheaper than the inferior Calcio or Malmo. 5 stars for a training ball, 4 for a match ball. Highly recommended.

Very happy with the suitability of this ball for my 6-year old. Whilst it is soft-feel it's neither squidgy or overly dense. It behaves well in use, rolls true on a hardwood floor, and seems a good weight. A very decent price too when you assess the shop-bought alternatives.

Service: I need to say a special word about the service from Safari Sports; the first ball we received was defective, but as it was purchased in advance as a gift, I only advised the company of this fault more than 3 months after purchase. They replaced the ball and refunded return postage with no issue amd with great speed. That's Internet selling done the *right* way. Thank you.

Decent training ball:Mitre Malmo Training Football

I'm comparing this against the Mitre Tactic which is a similarly priced training ball which I also own. They are both actually quite different beasts, and I'll explain why.

The Malmo flies further and is easier to kick than the Tactic. The tactic is heavier and harder to kick.

The Malmo has a smoother, quite hard surface, made of a PVC type material, whereas the Tactic is made of a dense vulcanised rubber. The difference this makes is that on harder surfaces, the Malmo rolls smoother and doesn't rub when rebounding so it's trajectory can be more straight.

Both are hard wearing balls. Having tested and played with both these balls on concrete and against walls repeatedly (the most abrasive condition/surface) The Tactic is more durable as it appears almost indestructible. The Malmo is quite hard wearing, although if used against an abrasive surfaces/walls wears down quicker than the Tactic as the surface of the PVC is marginally more easily split/scratched than the Tactic, although it can still take a fair bit of punishment, and it'll certainly last much longer than any cheap brand ball, and technically The Malmo is not an all surface ball whereas the Tactic is.

I bought a few of these to try them out but found it difficult to differentiate them from the Calcio, with the same advantages and disadvantages. On the plus side it retains air well, but on the negative side tends to go rock hard and never recovers from the cold.

Personally, I would recommend the Mitre Tactic as a good all round training ball, suitable for all surfaces and very durable. It has a nice cushioned feel which lasts well passed the point when the Calcio and Malmo become painful to head.

I bought one of these in yellow as a gift for an 8 year old - but once pumped up it was clearly damaged along the stitching and could not hold the air. I contacted the seller, who asked me to return the item (at my own cost) but said I had more than likely caused the damage myself by over-inflating the ball and so would not get a refund. There is no way this is possible as a football coach inflated it for me, and not fully, as he said it was safer for young children that way!

Hence, all in all, I would highly recommend looking elsewhere for a football, and to a company where the postage is free in the first place, as are the returns!

Amazon itself is a fantastic company and should only allow sellers with similar great customer service to trade via their website.
Very disappointing. Avoid.
